    Close Window
To determine the approximate correct size violin or viola your child needs, using a yardstick, measure from under the chin against the left side of the neck to the middle of the left palm, with left arm and hand fully extended out perpendicular to body (as if holding the instrument).
The following chart lists the corresponding measurements for each violin and viola size. Find the appropriate length using the above method and use the following charts to determine the proper size of violin or viola to get.

    CELLO SIZING GUIDE

To determine the approximate correct size cello your child needs:
    1. Seat the child so that the knees are bent at a ninety degree angle.
    2. With the endpin of the cello set at around 12 inches and the cello at a 45 degree angle, the instrument should rest such that the upper rim of the cello body rests on the sternum, and the left knee contacts the curve below the lower bout corner.
    3. The C-string peg (for the thickest string) should be near the left ear, with the neck a few inches away from the shoulder, and the left hand able to reach both ends of the fingerboard with ease.
The following chart lists the corresponding measurements for each cello size. Find the appropriate size using the above method and use the following chart to determine the proper size cello to get.
